The short answer: neither league is officially "higher" than the other. The Girls Academy (GA) and the ECNL are both top-tier national leagues for girls, and both attract college coaches to their events. The ECNL is larger, so in many regions the top clubs play there. But the better choice for your player depends on the clubs and coaches near you, not the league name.
Colleges are extremely selective in women's soccer, especially in D1 with the recent roster caps and 5th year of eligibility being added. If your player wants a real shot at being recruited, where she plays matters, and right now two leagues are competing to be the top platform for girls who want to play in college. Here's how they compare for the 2026–27 season.

What Is Girls Academy (GA)?
Girls Academy was founded in 2020, after U.S. Soccer shut down its Development Academy. Many of the DA's top girls' clubs moved to the ECNL; others formed their own league, which became GA.
GA now has more than 120 member clubs in 12 conferences and divisions across the country, with teams from U13 to U19. In 2025 it added GA Aspire, a second-tier league that gives secondary teams and new clubs a path into GA. In 2026 GA also formalized an alignment with the Development Player League (DPL), creating a single promotion pathway across tiers.
Throughout the year, GA runs national showcases (winter, spring and summer), the Champions Cup and National Playoffs, all in front of college coaches.
What Is the ECNL?
The Elite Clubs National League was founded in 2009. For 2026–27, ECNL Girls includes 129 clubs across 10 conferences. Below it sits the ECNL Regional League, with more than 375 clubs in 25 regional leagues, and Pre-ECNL for younger players. Clubs can earn promotion from the Regional League into the ECNL; four girls' clubs moved up for 2026–27.
Because it's larger and more established, the ECNL has more teams in more regions, and a higher share of incoming college players come from ECNL clubs.
Is GA Higher Than ECNL?
No. There's no official ranking between them. Both are top-tier national girls' leagues, both have strong coaching and both attract college coaches to their events. You'll find excellent players, coaches and clubs in each.
So Which Is Better for Your Player?
Speaking as former pros, we wish we could give you a better answer than "it depends on your region." But that's really how it works. In some parts of the country the best clubs are in the GA; in others the ECNL has the top talent by a long shot.
So look past the league name and compare the actual clubs near you:
The coach: how long have they been there, and how connected are they to college coaches?
College placement: where have the club's recent players committed?
Playing time: will your player get real minutes at this level, or sit on the bench?
Development: does the club have a clear plan for her position and her age group?
Fit: does the culture suit your player and your family's schedule and budget?
Say you have two clubs nearby, one in each league. One has had big coaching turnover in the last three years. Even if it plays in the league that seems more "elite," a stable coach with strong college connections in the other league may give your player better chances.
In the end, finding the right team is more important than finding the best team. The right fit leads to more fun, more confidence and more motivation, which leads to bigger opportunities at the next level. Our College Pathway program helps players map out that next level, from choosing a club and building an athletic resume to reaching out to college coaches.
