What Are the Best Apps to Create a Soccer Highlight Reel?
A decade ago, creating a highlight video took a lot of knowhow and specialty software. Fortunately, with the increasing use of video for social media posts, there are a ton of options that are really user friendly to create a soccer highlight reel.
Before You Start Creating Your Soccer Highlight Reel
If you haven’t done so already, the first thing you need to do is determine what types clips should go in your highlight reel. Once you know what types of clips you want, you need to trim the number down so that it fits in how long your soccer highlight reel should be. After those two steps, the next one is putting it together.
What Editing Do You Need to Do Per Clip
The main thing you need to do per clip is highlight you as the player in each video so the coach knows who they are watching. You want to make it as easy as possible for them to grasp what you want them to see – you don’t want to make them work to understand why you included a clip.
One tip for editing: expect the coach to be viewing your highlight reel on a larger screen, like their computer or iPad. This means it’s best to edit it on a similar sized screen rather than your phone.
A second tip for editing: once you’re done with your clip, have someone else (a friend or a family member) watch your highlight reel and explain to you why that’s a good clip to include. If they are not sure, your editing might not be doing enough.
Different Apps For Editing Your Highlight Reel
CapCut
CapCut is a favorite as it is easy to use and has a free desktop version for both Mac and PC. It’s easy to drop in circles on top of clips and to highlight your position on the field as well as move clips around.
iMovie
iMovie is another great free option for anyone with a Mac. Its user-friendly interface and intuitive design is great for anyone used to Apple products. The main drawback is that it is only available for Mac; if you have a PC or Android tablet it is not an option.
Mojo
Mojo is a great video editing tool as well, but it is only available for phones or tablets. If you want to use your tablet to edit your highlight reel instead of a desktop, Mojo can work well. You’ll also likely want the pro version as it has more tools and templates available for you.
Adobe Premier Pro
Adobe Premier Pro is one of the higher end options to look at. You’ll be able to make a professional-looking video, but the drawback is the price is higher than other options and there is a learning curve. If you are not interested in graphic design and don’t have experience with Adobe Creative Suite, you will have to watch multiple tutorials just to start.
Canva
Canva’s video editor is another great option, especially if you are used to working with Canva. It’s relatively intuitive even if you are not used to it with plenty of online tutorials to explain how to do everything you’ll need to do.
Regardless of which app you decide to use, recognize that you will need to spend some time learning how the software works before diving into editing your video. Taking an hour or two to learn how to use it will save you a lot of stress and frustration as you put your highlight reel together.
